The Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit child advocacy organization that has worked relentlessly for more than 40 years to ensure a level playing field for all children. They champion policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation.

The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment through a model reading curriculum and supplemental recreational and cultural opportunities. By providing summer and after-school reading enrichment for children who might otherwise not have access to books, the CDF Freedom Schools program plays a much needed role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps — and is a key part of CDF’s work to ensure a level playing field for all children.

This year For Oak Cliff has brought the CDF Freedom Schools program to Elisha M. Pease Elementary School in the South Oak Cliff community. Within its first year in 2017, For Oak Cliff enrolled 67 students in the CDF Freedom Schools program.
